Tasmania’s newest toastmasters club “Spirit of Devonport” reflects the friendly and welcoming nature of the Devonport people, as well as, the relaxed yet progressive nature of the town itself. Devonport is an area with plenty of opportunities and is known by the locals as the ‘city with spirit’. The addition of a toastmasters club in Devonport is just one example of where locals have created opportunities for personal and community development.
"Our club reflects the friendly and welcoming nature of the Devonport people, as well as, the relaxed yet progressive nature of the town itself."
Devonport is idyllically located on the Mersey Riveron the stunning North West Coast of Tasmania. This unique location opens the city up to river, ocean and mountain views which are enjoyed by its 26,000 residents. Its coastal location which isin direct line to Melbourne makes it the major sea gateway to Tasmania and its thriving port is the home for the two luxury passenger ferries, Spirit of Tasmania I & II. Devonport also functions as a regional service centre, serving a large rural and semi-rural hinterland responsible for over 40% of all Tasmanian vegetable production.
"Friendly, informal and fun club"
Prominent people representing local council, business, community organizations and the media supported the inaugural charter meeting held in January 2008. This evening gave the members the opportunity to demonstrate the fundamentals of Toastmasters while enjoying the friendly, informal and fun nature of the Devonport club.
"Icebreaker speeches have allowed members to shine"
The Devonport club charted with 21 wonderful people from diverse backgrounds. Ice breaker speeches have allowed people to introduce themselves to the club, express their passions and skills, but most of all, icebreaker speeches have allowed members to shine. Key points of speeches so far have been;
One member has moved on from his childhood ambition of becoming a garbage man,
Its’ not a good idea to fall asleep at airports,
Opal mining is not a good financial strategy,
There are new rules of marriage.
Formation of our toastmasters club has been the hard work and dedication of three key people, Damien Chong, Vicki Travers and Doug Green. The club is also very fortunate to have the experience of many distinguished toastmasters that have moved to Tasmania from interstate. Good leadership and strong enthusiastic club members hold the key to ensuring the future of our club.
